Sustainable Superabsorbent Biomaterials

About Namalab

Namalab is a deep-tech materials science startup developing NamaSAP, a biodegradable, plant-based superabsorbent that directly replaces fossil-based polymers in diapers, feminine care, and other absorbent products. Unlike other “green” alternatives, NamaSAP matches the performance and cost of synthetic SAPs while being compostable and industrially scalable.

We operate under a B2B model, supplying manufacturers with a drop-in solution that requires no changes to existing production lines, enabling them to launch truly sustainable, microplastic-free products. Our mission is to eliminate microplastics at the source and accelerate the global transition to circular, nature-positive materials.

Problem statement

The hygiene industry relies on synthetic superabsorbent polymers (SAPs)—fossil-based materials used in billions of diapers, feminine care, and incontinence products every year. These SAPs are non-biodegradable, generate persistent microplastics, and have a high carbon footprint of over 4,000 kg CO₂ per ton produced.

Despite rising regulatory pressure and consumer demand for sustainable products, no scalable, cost-competitive, and high-performance biodegradable alternative exists. This leaves manufacturers unable to offer truly compostable products without sacrificing performance or profitability, creating a multi-billion-dollar gap in the market for a viable replacement.

Traction information

We’ve achieved strong early traction that validates both market demand and technical feasibility:

30+ industry interviews with global hygiene manufacturers, labs, and sustainability leaders confirming urgent need for a biodegradable SAP.

Letter of Intent for 4,000 tons/year from a leading manufacturer.

Co-development contract and pre-commercial pilots underway with strategic partners.

Product performance matching synthetic SAPs in key absorption and retention metrics.

Backed by Alchemist Accelerator and supported by a technical team of 15+ researchers and advisors.

MVP Validation

Namalab partnered with manufacturer to pilot NamaSAP, a biodegradable, plant-based superabsorbent biomaterial designed as a drop-in replacement for fossil-based SAPs. Unlike fermentation-based alternatives, NamaSAP is produced using existing industrial processes, ensuring cost competitiveness and scalability. Implementation The companies conducted a pilot evaluating NamaSAP’s performance in existing diaper design and production line. Key performance metrics such as Centrifuge Retention Capacity (CRC), Absorption Under Load (AUL), and Free Swelling Capacity (FSC) were benchmarked against the synthetic SAP currently in use. -NamaSAP achieved CRC values of 32 g/g, matching current SAP performance -Seamlessly integrated into existing absorbent core production line -Enabled a biodegradable diaper prototype, opening doors to compostable certification -No increase in unit cost, ensuring market viability without a “green premium”
