Keen is developing artificial general intelligence, the most comprehensive form of computer derived cognition. Most AI models focus on specific tasks, using a narrow training data set focused on a singular or small band of actions. For example, a model trained to examine lung X-rays can and has outperformed human doctors at accurately identifying tumors. However, that model becomes effectively useless on any other task, like managing the power or patient scheduling at the same hospital. With Keen, they plan to build a conscious intelligence capable of a broad range of cognitive abilities most closely resembling a human mind. The applications of such higher intelligence is nearly endless and especially useful in augmenting the human labor force and productive output.

Carmack—the former CTO of VR giant Oculus—has taken goggle-gazing to the next level, programmed Doom and Quake, and founded a Mesquite-based space tourism startup. Now he's on a mission he says "could change the course of human history": artificial general intelligence. Keen's focus on AGI could lead to "something that behaves like a human being or like a living creature, and that can then be educated in whatever ways that we need to," he says. Carmack believes AGI will hit the market in less than a decade. enabling AIs to interact socially with each other—or with actual people.
